Gimme a Second - Lecrae

While listening through this album that song has jumped out to me for some reason.  Listen to the song and read through the lyrics and let them resonate with you.  Please comment your thoughts on this song.

Gimme a second, gimme a second yeah
Gimme a second, listen what I'm sayin to you
uh listen gimme a second
all I need is a second yeah
Gimme a second, uh yeah

Hey listen Cole talk that college talk
Wayne talks gangs Jay-z's talkin' money main to ain't talk fine
and people say I talk about the same old thing
reason that I sound the same's cause the truth don't change
look people get it twisted like a limit in the spirit
if I ain't talking killin' I must be talking bout healing
and I ain't talking bout Jesus gonna make me a million
with my hands to the ceiling I got that spiritual feeling
head bowed down knees to the floor
You a christian and you rap?
it must be the way you flow, NO
I talk reality like mama on the death bad
the birth of a child
the soldier losing his left leg
whose gon write songs to give him hope in his chair
addicted to pain killers whife left last year
your favorite rapper was probably tryin to make his next hit
talking looking who I got
who I shot and who I tip
couldn't be more common if them boys made sense
couldn't be more common if Serena was their chick
and this is not a dis this is how reality sound
let it off my mind this how my mentality sound

Hook:
Everything I do, I do it for you
I don't wanna single a thing, I don't wanna sing a thing
ain't got no kind of angle
I ain't tryin play you, you ain't gotta know my name,
you ain't gotta know my name
but in my short time only spend out of
baby birth and I know the sound

let me a little time
let me..been a couple lines
and I promise it might just change in two

I sound like the main rapper 'cause it crazy
the radio be like it love you
but they never play me
when I've been doing shows like you ain't gotta even pay me
I just wanna spread the same message that save me
you see I probably grew up just like you
tell em my heroes I wanna be just like you
I got in trouble went to court
show me couple inmates and he told me man
they started off just like you
I never rolled the round strap
I was busy chasing girls and money
I play ball and smoke weed and though world was funny
I'm with the church a few times with my head on the swivel
and I was looking for the bad ones that sat in the middle
I could not remember a sermon I never caught the spirit
and if Christians was tryin to rap then I'm not tryin hear it
I never would imagine that I would be rhyming
about the same guy that I couldn't confide in
never planned to get marry raise a family help kids
grow up, visit people in prison I was busy tryin to blow up
but see now I am unimpressed with the way these folks dress
or the engine in the truck, all I want soul rest
and I'm so blessed look of what he did to me
how could I keep this to myself somebody bled for me
nah, you don't just have to hate this
'cause God is the only reason I can say this

Rise Again - Needtobreathe

I have been reading a book about the arts and Christians role in creating culture.  Steve Turner, the author, asserts a major critique that modern Christian art does not speak about real life.  The art created does not sound genuine or have any ties to real life that people outside the faith can connect with.  While reading the book I listened through this album and I think that this song does a great job of breaking the mold.  The members of Needtobreathe are all outspoken followers of Jesus but very little of the art that they produce mentions Jesus or Christianity at all.  Instead they craft creative music, written from places of pain and joy.   "Rise Again"  steps through pain that occurs in life as we see relationships stretched and torn.  The bitterness of broken hearts and friendships is then contrasted with the truth that we will get up from this pain and rise again.   "I can see us moving on, I can feel that coming on strong", the joy that comes after the

Twenty-Four - Jess Ray

Lately I have been listening to lots of music and podcasts while working and biking to work.  I was feeling a need for some new music so I turned to NoiseTrade to check out some new artists.  My favorite thus far is Jess Ray because of the honest lyrics, tastefully simple musicality and overall enjoyable listening environment.  While on my flight back to Atlanta I was struck by this song at first because of the drums that propel this song behind the walking guitar.  If I were to add drums to a track like this it would have been done in a very similar manner.  Once I got past the drums I was awe struck by the simple power of these lyrics, take a read below and follow the link to her blog to listen.   To me it was not written for an outward expression of hope or encouragement but rather as a inward proclamation to the soul.  As the psalmist often choose to sing, this song speaks inward in a call to stand up and be reminded of truth all to often forgotten.  As I gear up for the star

You Will Be My Ain True Love - Alison Kraus

This song has so much power, even if you remove the lyrics.  I just decided to take in the full potential of the song by turning the stereo all the way up and playing the song a few times.  Before even looking for a video of this song I knew it was related to the Civil War and the separation that occurred between loved ones.  This song starts out explaining the battle field and how the soldier has survived the terrors of war.  As the song continues to build you can tell that the soldier wants to be with his love.  They have been separated by this war and now he wants to be back with her.  The last few lines portray his death and how he has been reunited with his "True Love".  I believe that this song describes his "True Love" as God, our eternal True Love. He has returned to his maker after being killed in Battle and this song paints that picture so well. This song has tons of power in the music behind the lyrics, it adds so much to the meaning of this song!
