For the longest time I would torrent all of the movies, music, and whatever else I could find on the internet for free. Being a student I have zero funds to buy all of the latest entertainment items. Therefore it was simple and easy to torrent to my hearts desire and that has amassed about 15,000 songs and over 300 movies. Now if some government agency reads this post then all of the evidence can be thrown in the river in a hot second. Oh, a small philosophy that picked up; I would not buy the movie or music because I have no money, therefore if I torrent the media and watch it and talk about it with my friends and stuff then someone might go out and rent, buy, or probably steal the media. Basically, I was not going get the media if I had to pay, so if I torrent it then I actually let the media hit a wider viewing audience. Now I know that this logic has many holes so I have being pulling back on the reins in the past year. While at Tech I only torrented three cd's because of my conscience and the fact that the internet is kinda monitored for illegal activity. But they are only looking for people like that Chinese student who was working with Anonymous to attack major corporations websites. Here is a link to check out that story: http://www.atlantaprogressivenews.com/interspire/news/2011/01/29/fbi-raids-georgia-tech-students-dorm-over-wikileaks-chat-room-(update-1).html
Now the reason I am writing this blog post, I found Noise Trade about a year ago and love being able to download artists music for free. They choose to post their music to this site which then allows the users to give tips so that the musicians make some money. Another way the artists get something back is by allowing the users to publicise their music on facebook, twitter, and email. I really like these methods of supporting the artists because it allows the customer to choose what they pay, if the pay, and how they can extend the network of listeners.
The main problem that I have found is that Noise Trade takes a cut of the "tips" and I have heard that its a decently large percentage. That doesn't stop my from downloading the newest Civil Wars live CD.
All is great in Sarajevo - We are leaving today for a day long bus trip to Makarska where we will wind down by the sea and finish up all project business.
