I am part of the Chrome OS pilot program to test the new Chrome OS. This device is in my mind the future of internet based operating systems. This device is basically your normal Chrome browser on your Mac or PC with only a few add-ons to increase the productivity. I have been using it for all of my mobile computing in the past weeks and it has been a great experience. Now as school starts back up I am running into the problems with my plan to use my chrome-book exclusively during the semester. One being required software for certain classes that I can not run within the Chrome OS environment. The first set of programs being AutoCAD and Inventor which are windows based 3D graphics environments. These two programs I am not expected to use my CR-48 with because they are native non-web-based programs. I will either work on my Dell XPS m1530 or work on a Gatech computer for these activities. Zotero an extension used for managing web sources is a great tool that we will be using during 1102 to research. The only drawback from this add-on is the fact it is only offered for the Mozilla Firefox environment. This means for the most in-class computer based class of the semester I will be required to lug around my Dell.
Features of Chrome OS I am awaiting with open arms.
Remoting being the first and most important feature of this operating system and overall browser. This will hopefully allow me to remote access my Dell or a Gatech computer via the browser of my CR-48. The functionality will come in two different flavors. First the citrix extension that will enable me to access the virtual labs offered by Gatech. Second the build in remoting tool that is highly expected and shows up upon the tools that are still in development. When this functionality of Chrome OS arrives I will be able to with out a doubt use the CR-48 for 90% of my computational needs.
Thanks Google for opening the pilot program to individuals
